Hi.

(I'm leery of posting a newbie question to a list named
bochs-developers. If this is the wrong place, please let me know.)

I installed bochs from Debian unstable. The relevant packages were:

ii bochs 2.0.2-1 IA-32 / x86-64 PC emulator
ii bochs-sdl 2.0.2-1 SDL plugin for Bochs
ii bochs-x 2.0.2-1 Xfree86 plugin for Bochs
ii bochsbios 2.0.2-1 BIOS for the Bochs emulator
ii bximage 2.0.2-1 Disk Image Creation Tool for Bochs
ii vgabios 0.3a-2 VGA BIOS software for the Plex86 and Bochs e
ii xfonts-bochs 2.0.2-1 VGA fonts for X, required by Bochs and Plex8

I tried to install Windows XP Professional from CD under Bochs
2.0.2. The disk loaded a bunch of drivers, then failed with the
message "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to
prevent damage to your computer." It suggested checking for "faulty or
mismatched memory" and to "try changing video adapters".

It closed with the lines

"Technical Information:

"*** STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000000D,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000)

I checked Google and at the advice of the manual set the
instructions-per-second to 10000000. The problem occurred again.

Below is the output from the bochs console:

00108164571i[FDD ] attempt to read/write sector 1, sectors/track=0 with media not present

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

I just had a war with Windows 2000 on real hardware. I found that
with Windows NT, 2000, and I assume because of heritage maybe
you have it with XP, that there must be a floppy drive present and
ready, even if there is no media used.

I got around it by accident by installing Windows 98 on the box,
and then installing windows 2000 as an upgrade.

YMMV

I never have found any reason for the need for the floppy.

In my case I had a super duper system which was all USB to
the point that they omitted the floppy device on the mother board,
which really did piss off both NT4, and by extension, I guess w2k.

I know little of XP and will continue to know little until there is an
OS that is not akin to ET with a tendency to report home info on
my system that is my private information.

Yes, I don't run the upgrades on W2k that do the same.

At work, we have been using Win NT4.0, Win2000 and WinXP on
floppy-less workstations for quite a while, so it DOES work.

Even a machine that has the floppy controller disabled is nicely
running WIN2K (no floppy is listed in the system overview).
